Pranayama Wellness Journey of Varun Bhanot, a Software Engineer

Quick Summary: Varun Bhanot, a data engineer working with a leading technology firm in Europe, had practised pranayama before but never felt sure he was doing it correctly or whether it was working. After nearly two months of beginner-level training with Kalpendra Sir at Ekattva Yogshala, which started from the basics of breathing before moving on to techniques, he noticed subtle but meaningful changes: deeper, more controlled breathing, longer comfortable breath holds, no more sweaty hands in meetings, and a disciplined morning routine. He is candid that his stress hasn't disappeared and that staying consistent with a hectic schedule isn't always easy, but he sees his ability to handle stressful situations improving and plans to continue into the advanced levels. The testimonial blog documents his course feedback and pranayama experience.

India is home to one of the biggest pools of IT talent but the stressful work routine and AI challenges are making professionals struggle with work life balance as well as personal wellbeing. No wonder, a lot of our IT managers and engineers have started exploring the world of Yoga through Pranayama, Yoga Nidra, and Mantra Meditation to cope with stress.

Hi, I am Varun Bhanot, an IT professional from India and currently based in the Netherlands, and this is my personal exploration into the world of pranayama to reconnect with my inner self. Read on to read my online pranayama course feedback!

A Software Engineer’s Pranayama Journey to Wellness

I am a data engineer by profession and work with a leading technology firm in Europe. I had prior experience with pranayama. However, I didn’t feel confident in my practice and wished to train with a seasoned teacher to get the flow right. I chose to do the same by opting for the Pre-Pranayama Foundation course.

Pranayama Course Feedback

I’m a technology professional living in Europe, and due to various personal and professional matters, life has been quite stressful and anxious for me. I had tried quite a few things, including pranayama, but I never really knew whether I was doing it correctly, whether it was actually working, or if I was progressing at all.

I stumbled upon Ekattva and decided to give it a try. My sessions have been with Kalpendra Sir, and what I really liked was that we started from the absolute basics. Instead of jumping straight into different pranayama techniques, we first worked on fixing my breathing and slowly built upon it.

Over time I could see progress. My breathing improved, I could comfortably hold my breath for longer, and I felt I was able to breathe more deeply and with better control.

Yesterday marked close to two months, and I have now completed the Beginner level.

Has all my stress and anxiety vanished? No. Have I seen some drastic overnight transformation? Not even close. The changes have been much more subtle.

For example, I used to get sweaty hands even during meetings, which I don’t really experience anymore. I now have a morning routine, a reason to get up early, and a sense of discipline that wasn’t there before. I wouldn’t say my stress has disappeared, but somewhere I feel my ability to deal with stressful situations and problems has improved.

It’s still not easy. With a hectic work schedule, getting up early every morning can be difficult and I do miss classes sometimes. But I continue with my practice and try to stay consistent.

For me this is still very much a journey rather than some quick transformation. I want to continue into the more advanced levels, deepen my practice, and hopefully understand myself a little better along the way.

A big thank you to Kalpendra Sir and the entire team of Ekattva Yogshala for being patient with me and building everything from the basics rather than rushing through the techniques.
