Yes, it is! Rishikesh has hosted international solo women on yoga journeys for decades and it shows in the infrastructure. Established areas like Tapovan and Laxman Jhula are well-lit and well-populated into the evening. However, we still suggest taking sensible precautions. The same precautions you'd take in any unfamiliar city also go a long way here.
-
Most international travelers need a tourist e-visa which can be applied for online before arrival. Processing usually takes a few days. So it's worth applying at least 2-3 weeks ahead of your travel dates. That way, you can avoid last-minute stress.
-
Comfortable, modest clothing (shoulders and knees covered near ashrams and temples). Light jacket for cool mornings and evenings. Reusable water bottle. Any personal meditation items you like to travel with. Winter visitors especially should pack real layers as mornings get genuinely cold in the yoga capital.
-
No. Rishikesh sits at a modest elevation of around 370 meters. So altitude sickness isn't a concern here unlike higher Himalayan trekking routes further north.
-
Not at all. Our programs including Yoga Retreats in Rishikesh are built to welcome complete beginners alongside experienced practitioners with teachers trained to guide a mixed group without assuming a uniform starting point.
-
A retreat is about personal practice, rest, and immersion over a shorter stay. People who are new to yoga start with a retreat. Teacher training, our 200-hour yoga teacher training in Rishikesh for example, is a long-term certification-focused program for those who want to teach yoga professionally afterward.

Indian Rupee (INR) is the only currency accepted locally. ATMs are widely available in Tapovan, Laxman Jhula, and Ram Jhula. Most guesthouses, cafes, and larger shops accept cards or UPI. Smaller stalls and rickshaws are usually cash-only. So, it's worth keeping some on hand.

Yes. Rishikesh is officially a vegetarian, alcohol-free municipal area (given its status as a major pilgrimage site). This shapes the whole atmosphere of the town especially after dark. It is worth knowing before you arrive with different expectations. Guests who wish to indulge in liquor travel to nearby regions in the evening.

Hindi is the primary local language. But English is widely spoken and understood especially around ashrams, guesthouses, and yoga schools given the steady flow of international visitors the town has hosted for decades.

It's best to stick to bottled or filtered water throughout your stay. Most guesthouses and ashrams provide filtered drinking water on-site. So, this is rarely an inconvenience. Just something to plan for rather than worry about.

Not necessarily but it's worth planning around. Monsoon runs roughly July through early September. Bringing heavy rain, fast-moving Ganga, and occasional landslides on roads further north. River activities like rafting typically pause during this window. So, if that's part of your plan, aim for a different season!
