Preparing Your Mind for Navratri: A Shakti Mantra Guide
Reading time: 3 Minutes

Most of us know how to pack for a retreat: comfortable clothes, a journal, a shawl for cool ghat evenings. The body's packing list is easy.
The mind's list is the one people usually skip, and it's the one that determines how deep the nine nights and the seasonal reset they're built to deliver can actually take you.
Why Preparation Matters for Mantra Work
Mantra chanting activates vagus nerve. For those unaware, it’s our body's main channel for shifting out of fight-or-flight and into deep rest. Think of it as a reset button you’re pressing with sound instead of a switch. This is exactly the overlap between neuroscience and tradition we've written about elsewhere. The science of mantra - vagal mechanism modern researchers are just now measuring is something the tradition named centuries ago. Arrive with a nervous system already somewhat familiar with this kind of settling, and the retreat's deeper work, including the day of silence and the fire ceremony later in the sequence, has something to build on, right at the seasonal turn when your system needs it most.
Simple Practices You Should Start Now
✶ Start small. Choose one short mantra and repeat it daily (even 5 minutes) at the same time each day. Consistency beats duration here. If you're not sure which mantra to actually start with, So Hum is usually where we point beginners first. It's built entirely around a sound your breath is already making, whether you notice it or not.
✶ Breathwork and Pranayama work the same way. A few minutes of conscious breathing daily begins training same nervous system the retreat's chanting and fire ceremony will lean on later. Like a warm-up lap before the actual race. Want structured guidance rather than starting from scratch? Our online pranayama and breathwork courses are a good place to begin.
✶ Simple stretching asanas. Nine days of ghat sitting, Hatha practice, and long meditation sessions ask a fair amount of the body. A short daily stretch now means you arrive with more ease already in your joints and spine.
✶ Practice sitting cross-legged on floor too. Sounds minor, right? Turns out it’s the part most first-timers underestimate. Often the most physically demanding stretch of early sessions. A few minutes a day, building up gradually, makes a real difference once you're on ghats.
✶ Quiet the digital noise gradually as well. Try one screen-free hour before bed in your final week before travel then push a little further each night.
✶ Give yourself a short trial of silence too. Hour of Mauna at home - no talking, no screens - is a small but real preview of deeper silence you'll observe on retreat's seventh night.
✶ And ease into lighter, sattvic meals in the days before you travel. It gives your system a head start on the reset retreat itself will deepen.
Letting Go of Expectations
The retreat is a container. Not a cure. Some shifts are immediate. Others surface quietly, weeks later, at home. Arriving without a fixed picture of what "success" should look like tends to open more than arriving with one.
A Simple Practice to Begin With
Sit quietly for a few minutes. Repeat “Om” with slow, steady breath. Let the sound settle rather than rush to next repetition. It's not the elaborate Vedic chanting you'll learn on ghats. But think of it as the first rep in the gym - small, unglamorous, and exactly what starts training same quality of attention you'll need moving through Shailputri to Siddhidatri.
If you want to understand what that single syllable is actually doing before you start repeating it, we've broken down the meaning and technique behind Om in a lot more depth.
